How do I wire a 3-wire dimmer that's replacing a 2-wire dimmer?
Dimmers
I have two 2-wire rotary dimmers in a plastic box, obviously not grounded. Both wires from the oId dimmers are black. One wire from each old dimmer is collected at a wire nut to a black wire from the house. I assume this is "hot". The remaining wire from each old one connects separately, presumably to the light each controls.
There's one more large wirenut in the box connecting four white wires together and since none of the white wires connect to the old dimmers I assume these are house ground, snd not used since the 1993-vintage rotary dimmers were two-wire devices.
Since the box I'm working in is above a kitchen counter, under a cabinet, and access really awkward, I'd prefer not to dig that ground (?) wirenut out from the deep recesses of the box, and just let the green wires on the new dimmers dangle. Since the old dimmers weren't grounded, am I creating any more hazard than existed before? Will not grounding affect the function of the dimmers?
When you are doing anything with electricity don't "assume" anything. 1. The white wires are neutral not ground. 2. No you don't need to ground. 3. No it will not affect the function of the dimmers. 4. Make sure you use dimmable bulbs.
