male cats fighting?
I have two altered declawed cats (not my choice)... one I had since before he was 1, the other I rescued when he was about 5 years (according to the vet). They bump noses and hang out together, but at night they pounce on eachother! they pin their ears and roll around, crashing into stuff, and they've even bitten eachother. It's pretty equal-the 5+ year old is a Maine Coon (maybe mixed) and the younger guy is from Newark alleycat stock, so neither is really bullied. But is it normal for them to fight and still be brotherly to eachother? Is it for fun or are they just being, well, guys?
Stopping Fights Between Your Cats
Cat Behavior Problems - The occasional cat fight is expected in multiple cat households, because cats are territorial. However, when aggressive behavior becomes the norm, you can take steps to stop it.
These are some cat training tips I use, and a few more from Friskies cat food: Identify the aggressor and victim, then separate the cats when they can´t be supervised. Give the aggressor corrective measures, and the victim rewards.
Corrective measures can include: confinement in a less attractive space; place a collar and bell on the aggressor; squirt the aggressor with a water sprayer during agressive acts.
For the victim give rewards such as free roam of the house, plus edible and affection rewards.
Gradually increase the supervised interaction, rewarding good behavior and using corrective measures against cat agression.
Cat Fights
Multiple Cat households are familiar with occasional, or unfortunately, frequent fights between their pets. Most of the time, I don´t take too serious of action when these happen. Cats are territorial and an occasional spat is expected. However, when the behavior becomes the norm, you can take steps to correct this. The following is a list of things that I do, along with some ideas from Friskies Cat food:
Identify the aggressor and the victim, then separate them when not supervised. Give the agressor corrective measures, while giving the victim rewards. Corrective measures could include: confining the aggressor in a less attractive space, place a collar and bell on him, squirts with a water sprayer during aggression. Rewards could include: allowing the victim to roam freely while the aggressor is confined, both edible and affection type rewards.
To help lessen the defensive posturing, take steps to make the cats smell similar to each other. Rub talcum powder on each cat or spritz cologne on your hands and when it is dry pet both cats (don´t put the cologne directly on the cat-their noses are much more sensitive than humans); use the same grooming tools on both cats to transfer their scents to one another.
Gradually increase the time of supervised interaction using corrective measures for aggression, and rewards for good behavior.
Lessen the defensive posturing
To help lessen the defensive posturing between housemates, take steps to make the cats smell similar to each other.
Rub talcum powder on each cat or spritz cologne on your hands and when it is dry pet both cats (don´t put the cologne directly on the cat-their noses are much more sensitive than humans). You should use the same grooming tools (combs, brushes, towels, mits) on both cats to transfer their scents to one another.
