Is it really 14 kt gold over sterling silver 925 italian?
I bought a 14kt gold over sterling silver italian chain marked 925. It looks like real gold, but how do I know whether or not its going to tarnish or turn black? will it turn black or give the skin any weird reactions? It looks pretty real..and it cost about 30$ Is this gold good quality?
The silver marked 925 is very good.
925 means that in a total of 1000 parts of metal, 925 are silver and 75 are copper alloy; with such proportions, silver is named... you said: sterling silver.
As for the 14 kt gold... well, 14 kt is not the best but at least is cheap.
The gold used to create jewels is often an alloy of gold with other metals and the purity of gold is expressed in carats (kt).
24 kt gold is 100% pure gold.
18 kt gold means that in a total of 24 parts of metal, 18 are of gold and 6 are of silver or copper.
14 kt gold means that 14 parts are gold and 10 are silver or copper.
As you can see, 14 kt gold is cheaper because it's just 60% gold and 40% soomething else.
Due to that 40% of "something else", 14 kt gold can change color.
If it's an alloy made with copper, 14 kt gold might turn red.
If there's silver, 14 kt gold might turn dark.
In short, 14 kt gold is shiny and pretty but it's rather delicate: it can easily change its color due to a chemical reaction with the acid Ph of the skin.
There's a proverb in my city (I live in Italy) that refers to the poor quality gold alloy with a lot of copper (copper is red...) used many centuries ago to make cheap jewels in the city of Bologna, Italy: the proverb, in italian, says "E' oro di Bologna, diventa rosso per la vergogna".
Translated into english, "It's gold of Bologna, it turns red in shame"...
