Can I wear my dad's fraternity badge?
PLEASE only people who know the greek system answer this!
I am a Gamma Phi and was recently passed down my father's Sigma Chi badge, which was a huge deal for me because it meant a lot to him. Would it be rude for me to wear both my Gphi badge with my dad's badge? Or should I get the sigma chi badge made into a ring/pendant? I really want to wear it because it is a great sign of respect for me and him.
My fraternity's badge wearing rules are that only a brother's fiancee, spouse, sister, mother, or daughter could wear the badge, and no other male could wear it. Under my fraternity, this rule would qualify you to wear the badge, as long as it's worn respectfully. I'm not sure about Sigma Chi though.
I looked at a Sig Chi chapter web page, and it says:
"While only initiated members may wear the badge, coat of arms or Sigma Chi Greek letters, this regulation does not apply to such items as pins for sweethearts, wives or housemothers."
While you're not any of the above, I doubt Sigma Shi would have a problem with you doing it, given that it's a sign of respect for your dad and his love of the fraternity. I would email a higher up in Sig Chi, someone who works for their national office, and ask them.
