I want to know about silver or sterling silver?
I have an egg two and a half inches high that opens up at the middle and inside 3 small shot cups about three quarters of an inch high. Looks like 3 would only fit inside. On the bottom of the egg it reads SILVER and below that is 1000. All 3 cups have the same thing on them. The egg is in a small leather, lined box and I got it at an estate sale. What does the silver 1000 mean? Any one have any ideas on what this is or where it came from? There are no other markings on either egg or box. Just silver 1000. I would appreciate any informations on either question. Thanks
It's probably a piece made in England. The 1000 signifies it is made of 100% sterling silver. Your usual sterling silver jewellery is stamped with .925 because it is only 925/1000 silver, since other alloys have to be added to harden the silver, otherwise it would be too soft to mould into jewellery that you can wear everyday. When it comes to silverware however, it is made of 100% silver, thus the beautiful engravings you usually see, and the unusual shapes of silverware.
I am assuming, the piece you have is something gentlemen would have used, and placed beside or inside their liquour cabinet. The little cups sound like shot glasses, and the egg that contains them, and easy to carry case.
In any case, it seems antique and I would take great care of it and even get it appraised. I hope you paid a good price for it, it certainly sounds wonderful.
