Will GIA certify a milky diamond?
Ok, my sis is looking into buying a 1.58c D color, VS2 diamond.. But it is also stated that it has a strong florescent blue. However, it is certified by GIA. So the one thing we wanna find out is if GIA will actually certify a diamond that appears to be milky or oily? Cause we read on many forums that it is a beautiful features for a diamond to be flour and it also makes the diamond unique and was once considered as premium diamonds... But we know that flour can also cause a diamond to appear milky... Any pros here?? Help..
P.S. No, we can't take a look at the diamond in person...
Yes, GIA will certify any loose diamond (that is not fracture-filled) that weighs more than .15 ct. A certification does not mean that the diamond is a good quality one. In fact, quite a few of the diamonds I graded for my GIA certification were what are considered lower quality diamonds.
Unfortunately, it is a misnomer that diamonds that are certified by any gem lab means that they are of better quality.
Fluorescence, by the way, is not uncommon in diamonds and does not necessarily make a diamond appear "hazey". In most cases, fluorescence is only observable under a blacklight. In fact, one of the most famous diamonds in the world, the Hope Diamond, florescences a bright red-orange.
The diamond you describe sounds to be a very nice quality one. In my years as a jeweler I have purchased quite a number of diamonds with strong fluorescence that were quiet lovely. I personally would not hesitate to purchase such a gemstone, if that helps you any.
