I've bought jewelry (both "real" and "costume") from consignment shoppes and estate shoppes. I love them, personally, as you can find some very unique pieces (and some amazing diamonds and gemstones) for next-to-nothing compared to retail value... you're not paying the obscene markups. If you buy a quality stone and don't like the setting, you can always have it re-set as you like, and still be spending less than you would in a normal store.
For example... my husband found me a beautiful 1ctw three-stone diamond ring at an estate shoppe for $250. The diamonds were all E colour and internally flawless when we had them appraised. That ring would retail for several THOUSAND dollars at any commercial store (online or brick and mortar).
